Desperate Housewives return in blaze of airbrushed glory

The cast of Desperate Housewives have unveiled a red hot new look to promote the show's fourth season.

Marcia Cross, Nicollette Sheridan, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Felicity Huffman are pictured strutting out of a firey blaze looking flawlessly bronzed and lean, thanks to some heavy-handed airbrushing.

With not a twin set in sight, the sizzling new shot is in step with the program's revamped catch-cry - 'It's A Hell Of A Day In The Neighbourhood'.

The creator Marc Cherry promises the show will return with a bang, and has revealed Sheridan's character Edie Brit - who appeared to kill herself in the cliff-hanger final episode of season three - will return to the show.

He told the Orlando Sentinel: "There will be an appearance by Miss Sheridan in our first episode, and it will be amazing."

American showbiz bible Entertainment Weekly has speculated that Edie might replace Brenda Strong, whose character Mary Alice has been narrating the show from beyond the grave since the series began.

Cherry also revealed Teri Hatcher's unlucky in love character Susan will "try, not so successfully, to settle down to domestic bliss" with her new husband Mike (played by James Denton), while Eva Longoria's Gabrielle is set to begin an steamy affair with her tempestuous former husband Carlos (Ricardo Chavira)

Meanwhile, the reason Bree (Marcia Cross) has staged a fake pregnancy will be explained and Felicity Huffman's Lynette will continue her battle with cancer.

Her fight be both emotional and comical, explains Cherry: "What we wanted to do is examine the effects illness had on family and friends. We don't want to do some ridiculous she-might-die thing."

"That's not our point in dealing with the disease. It was mostly to see what being sick does to you and the people around you. And in the second episode, we do a fascinating story that one of the women doesn't respond well to Lynette's illness."

A gay couple is also set to move into Wisteria Lane, and are set to shake things up.

Cherry said: "I'm going to have the first male Desperate Housewife. They move on the street, and they have as many issues as any couple."

The new season premieres in the US on September 30 and is expected to air in the UK next year.

Emma Watson films her first role outside of Harry Potter...to play another schoolgirl

It seems as though Emma Watson is never out of school uniform.

The 17-year-old actress must be counting the days until Hermione Granger, her character in the Harry Potter films, abandons her tie and crisp white shirt.

So you would think the ankle socks and bunches she wears for her latest role might account for the disgruntled expression on Miss Watson's face.

Far from it. Like many a young girl, she fell in love with Noel Streatfield's novel Ballet Shoes.

And she is thrilled to be playing the part of the orphaned Pauline Fossil in the BBC's adaption.

"I think the books are really special and could not let such an amazing project go. I loved Pauline from the start," she said on her website.

The doleful expression on her face as she wandered around the set in navy frock coat and beret is thought to have been purely for the camera. She replaced it with a smile during breaks in filming.

The feature-length film, set in 1930s London, tells the story of Pauline and her two sisters, who are adopted by an eccentric explorer, played by Richard Griffiths.

To get into character, Miss Watson has taken ballet lessons and dyed her hair white blonde.

The young actress, who is still at school, has amassed a £10million fortune after appearing in the five Harry Potter films, based on JK Rowling's novels.

Last month she was unveiled as the cover girl for the magazine Tatler.

Keira Knightley may have arrived in Venice to promote her latest film, but it is her shrinking frame that is attracting all the attention.

The actress looked tinier than ever as she attended a press conference before then attending the opening of Atonement at the Venice Film Festival.

Despite her frail appearance, Richardson turned heads as she appeared alongside her daughter Daisy, and mother Vanessa Redgrave, making it three generations of the Redgrave acting dynasty on the red carpet.

Richardson quit the smash hit American TV series last year to look after Daisy who was to undergo a series of operations on her legs after developing circulation problems.

However with her daughter clearly doing well, Richardson has now decided to return for 15 of the 22 episodes of the latest season.

Knightley has said she wanted to appear in the film - in which her fledgling love affair is destroyed by a tragic misunderstanding - because she "loves a bit of romance". Venice, with its canals, provided the perfect romantic backdrop. Sadly, the star's partner, the actor Rupert Friend, was not on her arm.

The film is an adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel set around the Second World War.

Knightley plays Cecilia Tallis, an upper class young woman whose fledgling love affair with the housekeeper's son (James McAvoy) is destroyed by a tragic misunderstanding.

The actress, whose curves were once digitally enhanced for a film poster for King Arthur in 2004, earlier spoke out in defence of celebrities who have their physical imperfections corrected with the help of an airbrush.

Asked if she thought that sent out the right message to women, Miss Knightley argued that she was in the fiction business - and just as movies are all about fiction, so posters and magazine pictures are too.

"Films particularly deal with fantasy," she said.

"There is a danger that happens when the line between fiction and fact gets blurred.

"Magazine pictures, for example, are fiction. One person has done the make-up, the hair, someone else does clothes and it is all choreographed by someone else."

However, she added that she would also like to see more variety in the type of person used in advertising campaigns.

Among the other competitors are: Sleuth, a remake of the 1972 whodunnit directed by Kenneth Branagh with Jude Law and Michael Caine in the title roles; It's A Free World, Ken Loach's study of migrant labour in the UK; and Nightwatching, Peter Greenaway's Rembrandt mystery featuring Martin Freeman.

Other films in contention include Michael Clayton, a legal thriller starring George Clooney, and I'm Not There, in which the likes of Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett play Bob Dylan.

Westerns feature strongly at the festival - Brad Pitt is expected in Venice for the premiere of his new film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, while Quentin Tarantino has helped put together a programme paying homage to the spaghetti western.

This year's competition also features two films which tackle the war in Iraq.

Brian De Palma's Redacted is a montage of stories about the conflict and is said to be highly critical of the Bush administration.

In The Valley of Elah stars Charlize Theron, Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon and tells of a soldier who goes missing after returning from Iraq.

Scarlett Johansson is expected to attend the premiere of The Nanny Diaries, while Woody Allen film Cassandra's Dream will premiere with an appearance by its stars, Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor.

Tim Burton, director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, is to be honoured with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

The winning film and prizes for best director, actor and actress will be announced on September 8.

Last year, Dame Helen Mirren was crowned best actress for her performance in The Queen.

Painfully thin Renee Zellweger continues her disappearing act

As Bridget Jones might have written in that famous diary, she is looking v. v. thin.

Stepping out at a concert in New York, Renee Zellweger showed the dramatic effect a strict diet and gruelling daily workout can have on your physique.

The 38-year-old famously gained two stones to play Bridget Jones in 2001 - and fans at the time celebrated the fuller-figure look.

But the Oscar-winning actress's appearance at the Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers concert left some onlookers surprised at how much weight she has lost.

She showed off her slimline figure in a loose-fitting knee-length smock dress.

"It's almost as if she's wasting away," said one concertgoer.

"Her legs and arms were incredibly thin. Perhaps she's simply been overdoing the gym workouts."

For her role in Bridget Jones's Diary and the sequel The Edge of Reason, Miss Zellweger deliberately piled on the pounds by gorging on pizza, doughnuts and beer.

At the time, she said: "One doughnut does not do a thing. You've got to eat 20 a day for at least five weeks to get results."

The famously private star refuses to be drawn on her dietary habits.

"It saddens me every day when people come up and say, 'OK, how did you lose that weight?'," Renee said after playing the eponymous Ms Jones the first time round.

"I can't speak about it because I am not an authority on weight loss. I am just not.

"I am not challenged with a medical situation that's weight-related and that I need to pay attention to".

Before leaving the concert Miss Zellweger was seen chatting intimately with Sir Paul McCartney.

Spice girl Mel B had a two-year affair with two lesbian lovers - who have spoken out to say they now believe she is in a 'fragile' state of mind, according to a Sunday newspaper.

Mel B - real name Melanie Brown - allegedly started a lesbian affair with Christa Parker, 35, a mother of two, after meeting her at the gates of the school in America where their children are pupils.

Earlier this year she stunned fellow passengers on a Virgin Atlantic flight from London to New York with her drunken antics.

The riotous behaviour of her party was so extreme she had to be reprimanded by cabin crew.

According to one passenger, her entourage "proceeded to get drunk and loud and were falling down in the aisles, climbing over seats, pointing at people and talking about them aloud.

"They helped themselves to bottles from the bar and generally disrupted the entire first-class section.

The cover of the September issue of Allure magazine features Britney Spears posed provocatively in jeans and dark brown wig, her bare breasts covered by her arms. There are two similar shots inside the mag. She very cooperatively posed for the shots in April.

When it came to sitting for the interview she had also agreed to, that became a much different matter.

"Britney showed up for Allure's cover shoot on time and ready to work," editor-in-chief Linda Wells wrote in an a letter for the issue, on newsstands Tuesday.

"She was entirely unself-conscious: She took off her wig and then stripped down to the waist, for no apparent reason, before sitting for hair and makeup," Wells said. "She was agreeable and cooperative on the shoot and left at the end of the day, followed by a trail of paparazzi."

As for the interview that was to follow, the 25-year-old Spears missed four appointments with Allure interviewer Judith Newman, Wells said.

At one point, Spears put off the chat because she was "delayed by important work in the recording studio," Newman wrote. But, she added, "The paparazzi found her a few hours later at a salon, getting her nails done." .

What do you do when you have no profile to accompany some alluring photographs? Newman wrote a first-person essay about her experience trying to track down Spears.

"Britney has long lost her role-model status," Wells commented. "That dream of a comeback seems to occupy an ever-more-distant speck on the horizon."

Director dumped by his wife over friendship with Kylie

The Chilean film director whom Kylie Minogue developed a close friendship with earlier this year has been dumped by his furious wife.

Laura Dahm walked out on her husband Alexander just weeks after giving birth to their child, blaming his friendship with the Australian pop princess.

Sources close to the couple claim that Dahm's infatuation with Kylie has destroyed his marriage with Laura "utterly humiliated and in despair".

"She told him she had had enough and was leaving him," the Sunday Mirror reported.

"Poor Laura just couldn't cope with her husband being so obviously smitten with another woman.

"At the start she chose to believe there was nothing going on.

"But after the baby - their second child - was born three weeks ago, things became clearer in her mind.

Kylie was repeatedly pictured with Dahm in May after meeting the 39-year-old in Mexico during a photo-shoot for her H&M bikini range.

They were photographed enjoying a cosy dinner together but both parties strenuously denied that they were romantically involved.

"We've been married seven years and I've heard of the 'seven-year itch', but I trust Alexander and he would never leave me for Kylie."

But their bond may have proven too much for Laura - a highly successful lawyer - to bear.

"What woman would be prepared to put up with a husband whose mind is so obviously elsewhere?

"The fact that it is Kylie - one of the world's most famous women - makes it all the more gut-wrenching for her.

"She is blaming Kylie's presence in her husband's life for the marriage becoming unworkable.

Yesterday Laura Dahm insisted that her marriage was not in trouble. Speaking from her parent's home, she said: "I had my baby three weeks ago and am resting here"

"There is nothing wrong with me and Alex."

Kylie has recently been spotted with former love Olivier Martinez and the pair are rumoured to be rekindling their relationship. They split in February after four years together.
