Perez Hilton opened up to Latina magazine to dish his “Six Simple Rules” for surviving in this crazy world.
“Be an innovator, not an imitator. I was one of the first to use the blog format to discuss celebrity news. Later, all these celebrity blogs started popping up, so I said to myself, ‘I have to put my own stamp on this.’ So I created the Perez Hilton persona, as a mixture of the two cultures – the Latino culture and this pop culture icon.”
“Grow (don’t blow) your cash. My parents uprooted their lives from Cuba to go to Miami and they had to bust their butts. My mom was a checkout girl at a supermarket and my dad sold used cars. That helped me understand the value of money. I still drive my beat-up ’99 Honda Accord because a car is just something to get me from point A to point B.”
“Follow your leader. Gloria Estefan has always been my role model because she is talented and worked really hard to get to where she is. My first brush with her was at a concert in 1984. I was 6, and she invited people onstage to conga with her and I went running up. I realized then I wanted to be an entertainer. When we met last summer, she gave me one great piece of advice: Work hard and stay grounded. And that’s what I try to do.”
“Tune out the static. I went to a very strict all-boys Jesuit school where it was mostly Latinos, who typically aren’t very accepting of homosexuality. It was a great school and I excelled academically, but in theology class they would teach us that being gay was wrong. People will try to make you believe that being different is bad, but I never believed them. So, I joined the drama club where nearly all the kids were gay. I found my safe haven.”
“Build an empire. I want to be the gay, Latino Oprah and live up to my nickname, Queen of All Media. But in order to that, I’ve had to be proactive. I set up all the meetings myself with key folks. Now I’ve got my own cable special, What Perez Sez, on VH1.”
“Always wear underwear. Do I feel sorry when paparazzi are taking pictures of her [Britney Spears] with no panties on, exposing her cucaracha, though? No way! Wear underwear, I’ve never regretted a posting and I don’t have trouble sleeping at night.”

Actress Roselyn Sanchez opened in the September issue of Latina magazine about leaving Puerto Rico, the hardships she faced in New York; lessons learned from divorce; her musical ambitions; and the “Desperate Housewives” role she lost out on.
On leaving Puerto Rico for the big lights of New York City:
“I was the youngest of four and the only girl, so I was very sheltered. I came with the little money I saved in Puerto Rico – from doing commercials, videos and a variety show – but I didn’t know what credit was. I didn’t know how to write a check. I was taking singing and acting lessons, working as a hostess at a restaurant and changing clothes at a McDonald’s before auditions. It wasn’t until I got my first steady gig in As The World Turns that I told my parents the truth about my experience – had they known, the would’ve sent for me.”
On what she learned from her divorce from [British boxer/model/actor Gary Stretch]:
“To never let any man talk to me in a disrespectful way because of his own insecurities. I was young, naïve and in a new country. After my divorce, Victor Manuelle showed me what a functional relationship was. Now I have the nicest man, an americanito, [actor] Eric Winter, by my side. We’ve been together more than a year. If you find a good man, you’ll be his queen.”
On her musical ambitions after the release of her album, Borinqueña in 2003:
“Although I’m grateful for the opportunities – I was nominated for a Latin Grammy and even had concerts – I’m still not happy about the way my singing career unfolded. Maybe I should’ve done pop, but I wanted to be the Latin Sade.”
On the role she lost out on because of her accent:
“Gabrielle in Desperate Housewives. But I’m happy for Eva [Longoria] because she’s my friend, and she deserved it.”
On the prayer Marc Anthony taught her:
“Dios conmigo y yo con Él [God with me and I with Him]. I say it all the time. I think Marc taught me that when we met on the set of his video for “Nadie Como Ella” [she played his girlfriend], one of my first gigs after I came to New York.
