She has a slim, toned figure that most women would die for. But Kate Beckinsale has demanded a body double for her latest film – because she "loathes" her bottom.

Producers have had to hire a £1,000-a-day nude stand-in after Kate, 34, refused to bare her derriere in a shower scene.

In the past the actress, who earns £3.2million for a film, has not been shy of squeezing into sexy clothing and almost showed her bottom in Uncovered in 1994.

But a source on her new film Whiteout said: "Kate has a terrible self-image. She thinks she is fat and she is always complaining how certain outfits make her bottom look big. Of course, the reality is that she has the most amazing body.

"The script called for her character to be filmed nude in a shower, focusing in on her bottom and thighs. Kate insisted on a double being hired. She was quite open on the set about not liking her body and said she particularly loathed her bottom and was not comfortable baring it."

A last-minute call for a double went out on a Hollywood casting website last week for scenes that begin shooting tomorrow.

Silver Pictures advertised for a 5ft 8in brunette, weighing just under 9st. It added: "It’s a shower scene so there is no intimacy."

Kate plays a US marshal tracking a killer in Antarctica in the £25million drama.

The source explained: "Kate just didn’t want to show her bottom, even though everyone on the set was saying how good it looks in jeans. She said she couldn’t face the thought of seeing her butt up on a big screen. She will have the final veto over who stands in for her."

Oxford-educated Kate, whose father, Porridge star Richard Beckinsale, died aged 32 in 1979, suffered anorexia as a teenager and at 15 weighed just 6st.

She has openly discussed her body image issues and recently complained of the unrealistic pressure on women in Hollywood.

She told US Glamour magazine: "I don’t think you can aspire to the Hollywood 'look' and nor can I.

"Everybody is retouched, stretched, lengthened, slimmed and trimmed. I could look at a picture of myself from the past and think, 'Why don’t I look like that now?' It’s because I never have. If I could swap places for a day it would be with someone with gigantic, real breasts. I am fascinated by breasts because my mother didn’t have them either."

She is not the first star to have a bottom double. Keira Knightley had one in Atonement and Sarah Michelle Gellar demanded one for Scooby-Doo.

But now Emma Watson is to be associated with a far more enchanting concoction - as the new face of the Chanel fragrance Coco Mademoiselle.

The 18-year-old actress has signed a two-year contract worth £3million with the French fashion house to promote the brand.

Miss Watson, who became a household name in the films based on JK Rowling's books, has signed up with leading model agency Storm, which is thought to have secured her first major campaign.

It is understood that she will replace Keira Knightley, 23, whose contract with Coco Mademoiselle ends this summer. Sources said Chanel is creating a new role for Miss Knightley who, in her latest advert, poses provocatively with just a bowler hat covering her modesty.

A source said Miss Watson's appointment will be announced next month. 'Emma has been excitedly telling friends that she is going to be taking over from Keira.

Emma has been slowly integrated into the Chanel brand.

They have been dressing her for film premieres and parties over recent months to see if she is the right fit.

'Once it became clear she is growing into a beautiful young woman and wears the Chanel brand so elegantly, they had to sign her up. Chanel realises it is important to target a young audience.'

It is understood that Miss Watson's bosses at Warner Bros, which makes the Harry Potter films, have given their full backing to the deal.

As the face of Coco Mademoiselle, Miss Watson, who earns £2million a movie, follows in the footsteps of Kate Moss, who was signed up in 2003 but dropped the following year in favour of Miss Knightley.

A spokesman for Miss Watson last night declined to comment.

She's famously flat-chested - but just as well known as a buxom pirate girl - and now Keira Knightley has revealed the secrets of her seemingly versatile cleavage.

Miss Knightley, who has described her naturally small breasts as 'pecs', has confessed that her busty transformation is all down to make-up.

But it was all an illusion, made possible by the film-studio art of "bosom make-up". It is a skill from Hollywood's golden age that fell out of favour with the advent of silicone enhancement.

Miss Knightley said: "They painted my t**s on me for the films, which is extraordinary because it's kind of a dying art form - in the past, they used to have whole sections of the studios devoted to bosom make-up.

"And I loved it, completely loved it. Because it was the first time in my life I had big t**s, and I didn't even need surgery.'

She said the process of creating the cleavage took 45 minutes every morning before filming started.

A make-up artist would apply a slightly darker shade of base make-up between Miss Knightley's own breasts to create a shadow to increase the 'cleavage effect'.

The actress's assets were digitally enhanced in movie posters for her 2004 film King Arthur. In British versions she appeared in her natural state, but in posters for the US they had grown to a C-cup size, causing much debate among cinema-goers.

Miss Knightley said she was anxious not to be typecast in her Pirates role and took the risk of appearing in the 2005 film Domino as a model turned bounty-hunter.

In an interview in Easy Living magazine the actress, who is dating actor Rupert Friend, tells how she solved the dilemma of nudity required in Domino after being told by director Tony Scott that the role called for her naked bottom to be displayed on screen during a sex scene.

"I said, 'You can have my t**s, but you can't have my a**.' And he was going, 'I just want the a**; I don't want the t**s.'

"Then one day Tony called me in to his office and there were three very beautiful women standing there completely naked, and I couldn't quite take my eyes off bits of them.

"And he said, 'Which one do you want, then?'"

The actress was being asked to pick a derrière-double. She said: "I did pick a very beautiful bum."

The station is bombed, and while Keira is not hurt by the blast, she is caught up in the ensuing flood. The scene is one of the last filmed for Atonement, released during summer in Britain and now playing in the US.

Since filming Atonement, Keira has gone on to resume her usual garb of period costume as she plays 18th century English socialite Georgiana Spencer.

Asked whether she felt responsible for girls becoming anorexic, she answered: "No because I have no control over it. You could say 'You're responsible for girls being anorexic because you are thin', but I can't be anything I'm not.

"I don't believe in role models. I don't believe that any person can be put up there as being better than any other person.

"Personally, I think I have the right to make as many mistakes as I like without having to feel guilty about a young girl going 'Wow, you're making that mistake, so should I'. People are cleverer than that."

She clearly is not happy taking on the responsibility of her position - though she is yet to complain about the size of the paycheques rolling in.
